The second issue of “Scratcher” is completed, and a big thank you goes out to John Ward for sending me the review copy! “Scratcher” is created by John Ward and Juan Romera, artwork and cover are by Juan Romera, and lettering is done by Eric Grissom. “Scratcher” is published by Arbutus Comics and has twenty-eight B&W digital pages.
The cover to this issue is…WOW! A bloody fist is holding onto a silver chain with a cross dangling down. The ink is visible on the arm of this person, so even before the reader opens the book to page one, this image may be an indicator of what’s to come within this story. In the previous issue, readers saw the protagonist of this story, Dee, heading out to Los Angeles to help out a man named Jerry Jones, since she failed to help out her dear friend, Sarah. This story starts off “in medias res,” where we see Dee running with some random guy, and then they come across…someone disturbing.
After this disturbing sequence, the story flashes back to six hours earlier, and then the story truly begins. Dee arrives in L.A. at her destination to meet up with Jerry Jones. As he chants some words, Dee makes him realize that she’s there because he’s the one who called her for help. Things change from this moment on, and the basis of this series comes to full circle. This is when readers are introduced to the random guy that Dee was running with at the intro of this story. The guy is a molecular virologist and he has his laboratory in his van.
So much happens within the next pages of this book, but I don’t want to spoil it for anybody. Let’s just say it’s gory, it’s about finding out what Dee‘s dealing with, finding Jerry Jones, and stopping him from these things that are happening to him. Can Dee handle all of this? After all, she’s just a painter! With all of this going on, will Dee be able to help Jerry with the aid of the molecular virologist? And what’s up with that guy anyway, what’s his purpose in this story? So many questions, but all will be answered after reading this story!
This second chapter of “Scratcher” was highly entertaining and the story is moving along well. The artwork by Romera is creepy, disgustingly good! Great job by the creative team so far, by story’s end, readers will be intrigued to see what happens next!
Overall, I rate “Scratcher: Part Two” 4.8 out of 5 Geek-Heads, this series is definitely worth reading! This series has potential to be a big hit for 2018, and I can’t wait for the next chapter! Fans of horror and gore will agree, “Scratcher” is a comic book series that people should be reading! “Scratcher: Part Two” can be purchased on Kindle HERE, and on ComiXology HERE.
